PM Imran underlines importance of dialogue and diplomacy during visit to Russia

ISLAMABAD: On Thursday, Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan and Russian President Vladimir Putin had a three-hour meeting in Moscow. During the meeting, Mr Khan highlighted the importance of diplomacy and dialogue to resolve disputes.

Mr Khan’s visit to Moscow came at a time when Russia and Ukraine are in a state of war. The situation added more spice to the visit as the whole world had its eyes set on Mr Khan. Earlier, the government officials had made it clear that the visit was aimed at growing bilateral relations and regional conflicts like Afghanistan would be discussed.

Though the statement by Kremlin had no clear information on whether the Russia-Ukraine issue came into discussion but the statement issued by Foreign Office mentioned that Mr Khan emphasised on using diplomacy to solve conflicts. He added that the situation between Ukraine and Russia was regretful, and conflict would have an economical effect on developing states.

During the visit, the two sides talked about future bilateral ties and collaboration on energy projects. The Pakistan-Stream Gas Pipeline project was also discussed. Regarding the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, Mr Khan said immediate steps needed to be taken to better handle the situation. The rising tension in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (IIOJK) was also discussed. The prime minister underlined the need for a peaceful solution.

Mr Khan also discussed the prevailing situation of Islamophobia, pointing out an imperative need for coexistence and interfaith harmony and appreciated Putin’s stance on respecting Holy Prophet (PBUH). Mr Khan also met Deputy Prime Minister Alexendra Novak and the business community of Russia and explained the steps taken by Pakistan to improve the business sector.
