Pakistan to chair Group of 77 in UN

ISLAMABAD: On Tuesday, after the 45th ministerial meeting between the Group of 77 and China, the members have elected Pakistan as the chair for the Group of 77.

The Group of 77 is known as the largest intergovernmental gathering in United Nations between developing countries, established in 1964 for the promotion of the members’ economic interests.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Shah Mahmood Qureshi appreciated the members’ trust and thanked them for giving the honour to Pakistan. He highlighted that as the chair, Pakistan would focus on the agenda of international tax management, open trading method, return of stolen assets, mobilisation of yearly climate finance, better concessional financing, distribution of SDRs to developing nations worth $650 billion, and debt restructuring.

According to the foreign office, Pakistan is one of the founding members of Group 77 and has three times previously served as the chair in New York.
