Pakistan signs Global Methane Pledge during the COP26

COP26

GLASGOW: Pakistan has officially signed the global methane pledge, joining more than 80 nations, working on reforms to reduce global warming and environmental pollution here on Tuesday. The pledge, led by the USA, was introduced at the COP26, a 2-day summit, attended by various heads of state.

Special Assistant to the PM on Climate Change, Malik Amin Aslam, accompanied by the Minister of State for Climate Change Zartaj Gul, represented Pakistan as Prime Minister Imran Khan could not travel due to domestic problems. After the meeting between Malik Amin and the US President Joe Biden, Pakistan became one of the 80 nations that have taken on the challenge of cutting down methane usage by 30 per cent.

“President Biden thanked PM Imran Khan for committing to the pledge,” said Malik.

Pakistan, which ranks among the top 30 nations that emit methane gas, has now updated its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) document following the pledge, as it commits to shift towards electric vehicles, making sure that 60 per cent of energy is produced by renewable energy sources.
