Noor Jehan shows slight progress after medication; Four Paws team to arrive in Karachi by Saturday

Noor Jehan shows slight progress

Karachi: As the condition of Noor Jehan has bettered since April 14, 2023, the experts of Karachi Zoo helped the ailing elephant to stand on her feet with the help of cranes and harness belts. During the last week, the 17-year-old elephant lay on the ground after falling into a concrete pound of her enclosure. Experts were extremely concerned about her situation because lying for a prolonged period could be injurious to her life.

Several notable personalities across the country prayed for her well-being and criticised the authorities for not taking proper care of the elephant.

On Sunday night, the Zoo team used a customised harness installed in a crane to help Noor Jehan stand back on her feet. The team applied the method over the instructions of the Four Paws. Zoo Director Kanwar Ayub showed satisfaction with the progress. He added that the team of Four Paws would arrive in Karachi by end of the week.

According to Dr Shalla Hayat, a member of the team treating Noor Jehan, they are trying to get the ultrasound after moving her to the right position. She said that it would help in seeing whether there was any injury in the lower abdomen. Dr Shalla added that Noor Jehan had received fluids & medicines, and multivitamins to stay hydrated and maintain her energy level. She also said that the news about a fracture in Noor Jehan’s leg was incorrect.

The elephant suffered from a large haematoma in the abdomen that resulted in edema at the reproductive organs. The illness caused a blockage of stool and urine. The Four Paws team suggested physical therapy and medication, but negligence was recorded on the part of the Zoo’s authority.

Last year, in August, the team from Four Paws carried out tusk surgeries on both elephants of Karachi Zoo (Noor Jehan & Madhubala).
