Non-Muslim couple gets UAE’s first civil marriage licence

UAE

ABU DHABI: The first civil marriage licence for a non-Muslim couple was issued here on Monday by the United Arab Emirates. The introduction of the reform is aligned with the UAE’s vision to keep itself ahead of its competitors in the region.

Approximately 90 per cent of the population in UAE comprises foreigners. The country has been making changes in its laws to present itself as a progressive force. A Canadian couple became the first to get married under non-Muslim status.

UAE has made amendments to multiple laws. This includes laws regarding, residency, live-in relationships, and alcohol restrictions. From January 1, 2022, it will no longer observe Friday as a weekend. UAE will be the only Gulf state to shift its weekends to Saturday and Sunday.
