Federal govt tightens grip around Nawaz; AGP directs Punjab to set up board to assess his health

ISLAMABAD: Punjab government has been asked by the office of the attorney-general to set up a board or a medical team to assess the current health condition of the former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

Mr Sharif has been in self-exile in London on grounds of poor health since November 2019. He had been given the green signal to fly to the United Kingdom by the Lahore High Court after the Mr Sharif’s health had deteriorated and the government’s medical team had suggested to allow him to travel to the UK for treatment.

His brother, Shehbaz Sharif, had submitted an undertaking in the court then ensuring that Mr Sharif would return to the country in four weeks’ time. According to a letter issued by the office of the attorney-general to the Punjab Home Secretary, “….the government of Punjab is requested to constitute a medical board/committee to examine the documents submitted as medical reports on behalf of the petitioner and Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif so that expert medical opinion regarding the physical condition of Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif and his ability to travel back to Pakistan is made available.”

The attorney-general had been asked by the federal government to write a letter to the Punjab Home Secretary. Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry had also previously said that a case would be initiated against Shehbaz for allegedly submitting a bogus affidavit in which he had ensured his brother’s return to the country.

The federal government argues that Mr Sharif’s health has improved significantly and he is fit to travel to the country where he is supposed to serve his time in jail.
