Prime Minister Narendra Modi to repeal three farmer laws

NEW DELHI: After violent protests for more than a year by the Indian farmers, the BJP government has decided to repeal the farmer laws that sparked a controversy across the country.

On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation in which he said that the government would repeal the farmer laws.

“Today, I have come to tell you, the whole country, that we have decided to withdraw all three agricultural laws. In the parliament session starting later this month, we will complete the constitutional process to repeal these three agricultural laws,” said the PM in his address.

The laws, introduced last year in September, allowed the farmers to sell their products to wholesale markets which were not regulated by the Indian government. The farmers, however, felt that if a non-regulated market took control, it would slash the prices of their products, allowing big business companies to take over. A nationwide protest was sparked by the farmers across the country in which celebrities and social activists also took part.

It is reported that the Indian government took the decision in light of the upcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh and northern states. The opposition leaders termed the decision as a success of their stance against the government and sacrifices made by the farmers.
