Milk mafia uncontrollable in Karachi; retailers selling milk at outrageous rates

KARACHI: Milk rates here are getting out of control. Retailers are selling milk at Rs190 per litre. Earlier on December 16, Commissioner Karachi increased the prices to Rs180 per litre from Rs170 per litre, but the retailers are defying the official hike and imposing the rates they want.

Subsequently, the yoghurt prices have gone up from Rs280 per kilogram to Rs300 per kilogram. Authorities concerned are showing no interest in addressing the issue.

When inquired from retailers, they said that wholesalers were providing milk at high rates hence it’s not possible for them to sell milk at the official rate. The spokesperson of Karachi Milk Retailers Association briefed that wholesalers were providing milk at Rs182 to Rs184, which is why retailers were charging Rs190 per litre of milk.

He added that government takes no action against wholesalers but always imposes fines on retailers for overcharging consumers.
