JIT to investigate online trolling of govt and ECP officials

Following the claims of a social media campaign launched against the officials of the caretaker government and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) has been formed and tasked with bringing the “culprits” to justice. The caretaker government has sprung into action after what it calls a “malicious” social media campaign was launched against the officials over rigging allegations.

According to the interior ministry’s notification, the JIT has been constituted in line with the Section 30 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016. Its convener will be the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) additional director-general.

The JIT comprises members from the Inter-Services Intelligence, the Intelligence Bureau, Nadra, and the PTA. If need be, the JIT could hire IT experts to uncover the social media campaign that was launched against the officials. The team will also be tasked with coming up strategies to negate any such threats in future. The JIT has been directed by the caretaker government to submit its report within 15 days.
