JERUSALEM According to Israeli officials, a Palestinian member of Islamist Hamas movement killed one and wounded four people on Sunday before Israeli police shot him dead. The four wounded included two police officers, who were admitted to the Hadassah hospital.
The security has been put on high alert by the Prime Minister of Israel Naftali Bennett following the attacks.
“This morning there was a serious shooting attack in the Old City of Jerusalem. At the moment we have one dead and three wounded. Two policewomen and one policeman quickly neutralised the terrorist,” said the PM.
The person who died was a South African immigrant, named Eliyahu Kay, a Western Wall plaza’s employee. Public Security Minister of Israel Omer Bar-Lev issued a statement claiming that the attacker belonged to Palestine.
“He was a member of Hamas, the political branch, not the armed wing,” said Omer in his statement. The shooter was identified as Fadi Abu Shkhaydam whose wife and child were out of country.
