A unique incident occurred in the history of judicial of Pakistan when a local court judge in Punjab took the help of artificial intelligence to grant pre-arrest bail to a minor accused of attempting to rape. According to details, a judge in Central Mandi Bahauddin district took the help of artificial intelligence software ‘ChatGPT4’ by asking about the laws’ sections in case a minor is convicted of a crime.

The judge asked the ChatGPT-4 OpenAI, could a minor accused in Pakistan secure bail after arrest? To which the AI replied that the Juvenile Justice System Act 2018 is in force in Pakistan. It added that according to section 12 of the Act, a court could grant conditional bail. But the final decision would be taken by the court.

The court then asked what would be the situation according to Section 83 of the Pakistan Penal Code. Chat GPT replied that the crime committed by a child up to 7 years of age would not be counted, till the age of 12 years. Upon this, the judge told ChatGPT-4 that the age limit has been increased to 14 years. The AI thanked for the correction and said that an amendment in 2016 increased the age limit.

Additional Sessions Judge Aamir Munir asked a total of 18 questions to ‘ChatGPT-4’. On two occasions he made corrections which the chatbot acknowledged and apologised. The judge wrote that though the bail decision is usually not that long, it was necessary to write the entire discussion because of the use of technology.

A court in Mandi Bahauddin asked 18 questions to ChatGPT to give its verdict on a case of a minor attempting to rape. The judge also made two corrections, which were accepted by the system.
