ISLAMABAD: On Tuesday, scholars and Ulemas of different sects came together to condemn the lynching incident, calling the act ‘extrajudicial’ and ‘un-Islamic’, and called for legal action against the culprits.

Sri Lankan factory manager Priyantha Kumara was brutally tortured, killed and later burnt by a mob of factory employees, who had accused him of blasphemy, on Friday.

Chairman Council of Islamic Ideology Dr Qibla Ayaz said that no one can accuse anyone of blasphemy without proof, and what happened in Sialkot was an inhumane act. The clerics met Sri Lankan High Commissioner Mohan Wijewickrama in Islamabad after which they addressed the media.

He further added that what happened in Sialkot was contrary to the Holy Quran’s teachings, and even the Constitution of Pakistan did not allow such brutality. He said that the unfortunate incident had brought shame to the country’s name, and the authorities must take the strictest possible legal action against the people involved.

The Chairman of the Islamic Ideology Council stated that all Ulemas appreciate the decision of awarding Malik Adnan the Tamgha-i-Shujaat (Medal of Bravery) for trying to stop the mob from killing Kumara.
