At least 44 people drown on Western Sahara coast attempting illegal migration

RABAT: On Sunday, 44 people drowned on the Western Sahara coast after their boat overturned. The deceased souls and 12 others were attempting illegal migration but instead met a horrible accident.

According to an NGO, Caminando Fronteras, seven dead bodies have been brought ashore while 12 survivors have been arrested. They added that the boat sank at the coast of Cap Boujdour headland. A representative of the NGO, Helena Maleno, said that the migrants could have been trying to enter the Canary Island of Spain.

However, the Moroccan government has not issued any official statement.

Morocco has been a prime entry point for illegal immigrants for the past few years, as many migrants have fled to Europe by unlawful means in quest for better lives. Earlier on Friday, Spain and Morocco issued a joint statement in which they vowed to halt the illegal migration.
