DHAKA: On Friday, a fire incident in Bangladesh killed 32 people. Around 500 people were onboard when the ill-fated ferry caught fire.

According to the police, the tragedy took place 250 kilometres away from Dhaka, in the vicinity of Jhalokathi. While talking to the AFP, the chief of police said they have recovered 32 dead bodies, and are searching for more casualties. He said that most of the passengers died due to fire with some drowning in the sea water.

The chief added that the fire may have started from the engine room. He briefed that around 100 injured had been admitted to the Barisal’s hospital.

Bangladesh has faced similar incidents in the past as well when 32 people died after a ferry drowned in June 2020. Similarly, 78 people lost their lives after a ship hit a cargo vessel in February 2015.
